Credit Card Shuffle, Q4 Edition

Day 4/365 I may earn a bonus reward if you use the referral links contained in this article. Thank you for your support! With the beginning of the new quarter, it’s time to reevaluate what’s in our wallets. While it’s not what Jennifer Garner or Samuel L. Jackson are looking for, let me walk you through how I decide what credit cards to put at the front of the stack for the majority of our spending. Chase Freedom This is the one card that most of the other card decisions rest upon since it changes every quarter and Ultimate Rewards are so very valuable (when you add a premium card, see below). This quarter (October-December, 2020), the categories are Department Stores, PayPal, and Chase Pay. This won't affect what's in…

Back to School Shopping at Target

330/365 This weekend, you can save on a future purchase at Target by doing some school supply shopping. We finished our back to school shopping weeks ago, but we can always stock up on things the kids will need throughout the year. The Deal Head to Target on Saturday, August 24 or Sunday, August 25, 2019, and spend at least $10 on back to school supplies. At checkout, you will receive a coupon for 15% off a future purchase dated September 3-14, 2019. There are exclusions, of course, but you will have to check the coupon you receive to find out what is excluded. Better Late Than Never As I said, we finished our back to school shopping awhile ago. I had been waiting for a category coupon of the…

Make Money Buying Visas at Safeway

297/365 This post may contain affiliate links for which I may earn a small commission. Thank you for supporting my blog! Check your just for U account for two high-value coupons for Visa gift cards. You can actually turn a profit on this deal! The Deal Through August 3, you can get $15 off of two $100 Visa gift cards and $10 off two $50 Visa gift cards by clipping the coupon in your just for U account at Safeway or other Albertsons branded grocery stores. This is a great deal, especially if you have a credit card that gives you rewards at grocery stores. These gift cards can be used like a debit card at other stores which do not give you a category reward on your credit card.…

Credit Card Shuffle, Q3 Edition

278/365 I may earn a bonus reward if you use the referral links contained in this article. Thank you for your support! With the beginning of the new quarter, it’s time to reevaluate what’s in our wallets. While it's not what Jennifer Garner is looking for, let me walk you through how I decide what credit cards to put at the front of the stack. Chase Freedom This is the one card that most of the other card decisions rest upon since it changes every quarter and Ultimate Rewards are so very valuable. This quarter (July-September, 2019), the categories are gas stations and streaming services. This presents a very interesting dilemma since the American Express Blue Cash Preferred just added streaming services as a 6% cash back category two months…

DOSH Is Turning Two

218/365 DOSH is having an anniversary this weekend, and they are celebrating by increasing the cash back they offer at a few stores by, you guessed it, 2%. I am most interested in the increased amount at Staples. Let's see why... Fee-Free Visas at Staples Starting on Sunday, May 5, through Saturday, May 11, 2019, you can pick up a $200 Visa at Staples with the activation fee waived. This is a great way to pick up some Ultimate Rewards using your Chase Ink Business Plus or Chase Ink Business Cash that earns 5x at office supply stores. While the Plus is no longer available, you could apply for the Chase Ink Business Preferred and then downgrade to the no-fee Cash version, so long as you have a premium Ultimate…

Credit Card Shuffle

186/365 I may earn a bonus reward if you use the referral links contained in this article. Thank you for your support! With the beginning of the new month, it's time to reevaluate what's in our wallets. I promise not to break into a cheesy 80s dance like that famous football team, but let me walk you through how I decide what to put at the front of the stack. Chase Freedom This is the one card that most of the other card decisions rest upon since it changes every quarter and Ultimate Rewards are so very valuable. This quarter (April-June, 2019), the categories are grocery stores and home improvement stores. So our American Express Blue Cash Preferred will get a well-deserved break while the Chase Freedom takes its place…

Goal Update: Disney Premier Passport Progress

100/365 It was a good month of profits to put toward our Disney Premier Passports! We only had a couple of minor blips, but all in all, we came out much stronger than last time. Target Gift Card Sale I hit the Target gift card sale hard, stocking up for the next year of Target purchases while skimming the profit straight off the top to put toward our Disney fund. I bought $2100 in Target gift cards, so my savings was 10%, or $210. Target Gift Card with Purchase I love the deals where you buy so much of a certain product or category, and you get a gift card. I'm going to buy the product anyway, so why not get some free for it. This month had several good…

Chase Ultimate Rewards

Day 33/365 2018-2019 Chase Ultimate Rewards are the gold standard in any travel hacker's arsenal. Some might say it's American Express Membership Rewards, but I haven't dabbled in those yet, and I think Ultimate Rewards is the best program to get your feet wet. Chase's 5/24 Rule Chase has made it a bit harder to do what's called "churning" of their cards, where you get a card simply for the bonus, cancel it, and then get another one as soon as you can. I've not done this either, but I still have to live with the new rules that Chase has put into place, which is you can't have opened more than four new cards in the past 24 months with any lender. So this changes the strategy for opening…

Ease Your Budget and Your Relationship with Personal Allowances

27/365 When you are beginning to put together a budget with your family, it might be a good idea to think about incorporating personal allowances into your plan. No Judgement Spending Personal allowances are a way to give each member of your family their own pool of discretionary money without judgement from other family members. I have a hard time biting my tongue when my kids want to spend their money on yet another squishie or army men set. I do encourage them to save their money for upcoming trips, but sometimes can't help taking them with me to Target or Staples where they are tempted by all of the toys at the checkout. Maggie had spent her money this way right before our last trip and had to learn…
